How it works

How we clear a drain

  1. Inspect

We start by inspecting the drain, with a camera where it helps, to find exactly what the blockage is and where it sits.

  2. Clear

A drain snake or a hydro-jetter, whichever suits the clog, removes the obstruction.

  3. Check

A final inspection makes sure the drain is completely clear and working properly before we leave.

Put down the drain cleaner

Sometimes a plunger is all a clog needs. When it isn’t, store-bought drain cleaners and clog removers are often too harsh on pipes and can make them erode. Clearing a clog without damaging the pipe usually takes the right tools, and that is the moment to call.

When it’s more than one drain

Sewage backing up in the basement, water rising in the tub when you flush, water pooling in the yard or a sudden jump in the water bill point past a single drain to the main sewer line.

Questions

Good to know

My drain cleared on its own overnight. Do I still need someone out?

A clog that drains slowly by morning usually means the blockage shifted rather than left. Grease and soap build-up softens when water sits against it, then re-hardens tighter than before. The second backup is almost always worse than the first, and it tends to arrive on a weekend.

Why does one slow drain mean I should check the others?

If a single fixture is slow, the problem is usually in that branch line. If two or more fixtures on different sides of the house slow down together, the restriction is downstream in the main, and cleaning the individual drains will not touch it. Running a sink while watching the basement floor drain tells you which one you are dealing with in about a minute.

Will the drain cleaner I bought at the hardware store make things harder for you?

It makes the job messier and sometimes slower. Caustic product sits on top of the clog instead of removing it, so when the cable goes in there is standing chemical in the line that has to be handled carefully. It will not stop us from clearing it, but tell whoever shows up what you poured down, and how much.

How long should a drain cleaning actually hold?

A properly cleared line with no structural defect should run clean for a year or more. If the same drain backs up within a few weeks, the clog was not the real problem and something in the pipe is holding material, usually a belly, a root intrusion, or a bad slope. That is the point to put a camera in rather than pay for another cleaning.

Is there a wrong time to call, given you are open 24 hours?

Call when it is actually backing up. Water rising in a basement does not care what time it is, and waiting until business hours while the line is blocked adds sewage clean-up to the bill. For a drain that is only slow and not overflowing, scheduling during the day is fine and gives us more room to camera it if needed.

“We called Bill at Affordable Plumbing at 11 pm thinking we would leave a message, but to our surprise he answered the phone.”
