Why kitchen drains clog

Grease, food scraps and soap build up along the pipe until water can’t get past. Once a clog has formed, a plunger rarely shifts it for long, and store-bought cleaners can be too harsh on the pipes.

  • New faucets and dishwashers installed

Garbage disposal repair

A jammed disposal, strange noises or a unit that’s stopped altogether: we find the cause, whether a faulty motor, worn-out blades or an electrical problem, and repair it with quality replacement parts.

Keeping it flowing

Be mindful of what goes down the drain. Keep grease, large food scraps and anything non-flushable out of it, and a kitchen line stays clear far longer.

Questions

Good to know

I never pour grease down the sink. Why is my kitchen line still greasy?

Grease arrives dissolved in warm dishwater off plates, pans, and the dishwasher, then cools and plates onto the pipe wall a few feet down the line. It builds in thin layers over years. Almost every kitchen clog we open is this, not someone emptying a fryer into the sink.

Does hot water and dish soap actually clear a kitchen clog?

It moves the problem rather than solving it. Hot water softens the grease enough to slide further along the pipe, where it cools and hardens in a spot that is harder to reach. People who do this weekly usually end up with a blockage deeper in the line.

Why does my garbage disposal back up into the other side of the sink?

The two basins share a tee below the counter, so a restriction downstream of that tee sends water to whichever side has room. It tells you the disposal is probably fine and the line past it is not. A disposal that hums without turning is a separate issue entirely.

Are coffee grounds and eggshells really that bad?

Both are, for the same reason. They do not dissolve, they settle in low spots, and they bind with grease into something closer to concrete than sludge. Rice, pasta, and celery cause their own trouble by swelling or wrapping. The disposal grinds them small, it does not make them go away.

Is it the disposal or the drain line that needs fixing?

Fill the other basin and release it with the disposal off. If that side drains normally, the line is clear and the disposal is your problem. If both back up, the disposal is a bystander and no amount of replacing it will help.
