Often the first sign of a sewer problem
A basement floor drain usually sits lowest in the house, so when the main line is blocked that’s where water shows up first. Sewage backing up in the basement is one of the clearest signs of a sewer line problem.

How it works
How we clear a floor drain
Inspect
We start by inspecting the drain, with a camera where it helps, to find exactly what the blockage is and where it sits.
Clear
A drain snake or a hydro-jetter, whichever suits the clog, removes the obstruction.
Check
A final inspection makes sure the drain is completely clear and working properly before we leave.

Questions
Good to know
Water comes up my basement floor drain only when it rains hard. Why?
That pattern points away from a clog in your own line and toward stormwater getting into the sanitary system, either through your line or the public one. Older parts of Omaha have long-standing issues with heavy rain overwhelming sewers, and the lowest drain in your house is where it surfaces. A camera can confirm whether the water is entering on your side of the property line.
My floor drain smells, but nothing is backing up. What is that?
Usually a dry trap. The U-bend under the drain holds water that blocks sewer gas, and in a basement that drain can go months without use, so the water evaporates. Pour a bucket of water into it and the smell should stop within a day. If it does not, the gas is getting in somewhere else.
Should I install a backwater valve?
It is worth pricing if your basement has flooded from the drain more than once, since the valve closes when flow reverses and keeps sewage out of the house. They do need occasional inspection to keep working. They also do not help against groundwater coming through the walls or floor, which is a different problem with a different fix.
Can I just cap or cement over a floor drain I never use?
Please do not. The floor drain is the pressure relief point for your whole system, and sealing it means the next backup finds the next lowest opening, which is often a shower pan or a toilet on the main floor. It is also the drain that saves you when a water heater lets go.
Why would a floor drain clog if nothing ever goes down it?
Because everything else in the house passes nearby. Laundry lint, soap scum, and sediment settle in the trap, and a drain that rarely gets a strong flush never clears itself. In older homes the floor drain line is often the oldest and shallowest run in the building, which makes it the first to catch roots.
